(Continued from Part 2: Where's my next MMO: The Teet of WoW)
So what does the future hold for us mmorpg fans? I see Aion on the horizon which appears to be gaining a ton of attention, and a few others that might be what I’m looking for... but probably not. We need something ground breaking for the genre, something to change the way people are currently developing mmo’s. Something new and original, something we’ve never seen before. Games like this don’t come around too often, but they do exist, and it’s about time we see a game like this make an appearance in the mmo genre.
Aion does “look” cool, flying around and whatnot. At the same time, it looks like every other mmorpg I’ve ever played. Follow a quest chain that drives you insane (how many times can some lady misplace her cats), level up and monotonous killing. I would like to try a beta or trial first, before I completely disregard this game, especially with all the hype it’s been getting. I have this gut feeling, however, that it’s going to want to make me wring out my nuts with one of those old school wringer things, and I’m not sure if I really want to experience that.
The coveted Star Wars: The Old Republic. It looks really amazing, and is being developed on the Hero Engine which IS really amazing. It seems like they are pumping a ton of money into marketing the crap out of this thing, with these crazy CGI trailers. I have yet to hear anything about a release date or any progress in the development of the game. Which makes me wonder… will I be watching these trailers for the next 4 years and by the time it comes out, the graphics will be shittier than Runescape? Bioware does make pretty good games and hopefully this will live up to their reputation because it is a game that I think I want to play.

APB, a new game being developed by realtime worlds is looking pretty promising. You might have noticed me uploading some podcasts to grunge gamer from them. I think the concept looks original, and it’s nice to have something different. Character creation and their “tattoo” system is some of the most in depth character customization I have ever seen in the mmorpg world. My biggest problem with this game is that the concept looks like GTA’s and Second Life’s love child. Plus I can’t wait until all of the tattoos (made by bastard 12 year olds with ADHD) just look like a bunch of boobs, choads and vaginas. With all of the customization available you know it’s only a matter of time before it happens. I would love to be able to get into a beta of this game though just to see how the actual game engine plays.
Why would you even bother releasing screen shots for Final Fantasy XIV (http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=4906)? When Final Fantasy XIII is not going to be released in the US until Q1 2010 (and will probably be pushed back). FF XIV has to be at least 2 years out, and they’re already giving me a bad case of blue balls because those screen shots might be the best CGI I’ve seen in a mmorpg to date. For a mmorpg to have graphics like this is amazing, I guess they are trying to make up for FF XI. Playing that game was like getting a purple nurple whilst watching a menage a trois featuring the Golden Girls (all that flappy roast beef, mmm). If they stick to whatever engine they are using to generate those graphics I think we’re in for a treat, but everyone might have to join me with a major case of blue balls as we sit and wait.
Mabinogi: Heroes looks beautiful. The interactive world gives me the chills when I watch it:

Because of the interactive world, this game will have similar features to Guild Wars, where you only are surrounded by the rest of the players inside major towns & cities. While this is a good solution to cut down on the assholes in the game and the amount of griefing you have to do (“Hey don’t KS me”), it makes it extremely hard for solo mmo players to find a decent group and experience the game to its fullest. You need an entire army of people that all can play at the same time, and wont level up past you if you can’t put on your mmorpg addiction goggles for a week. Then you come back and all your friends are 10 levels ahead of you, bunch of damn wankers, that really sucks bawls when that happens. Beyond that, this game looks like a step in the right direction for the genre of mmo’s. The game play looks amazing and of course there’s no word on a North American release, so hurray for that.
After taking an extremely quick look at a few mmo’s that are coming out, I still don’t see anything that’s going to break the mold and change the genre for the good. There are a few shining lights out there, and will be interesting to play for a few months, but probably will not be the game where my wife comes down into the basement to see my eyes blood shot, sitting in a pile of my own shit and urine and yet, my fingers still on WASD, and clicking away on my mouse. Me and my money have decided we’re ready to invest into a new ground breaking mmorpg, but we can’t seem to find one worthy.

Went through the pain that is registering just to comment on this.
APB isn't a MMO and the "No Elves" campaign wasn't even theirs. If they did brand a version of that it was "borrowed" from the folks over at Global Agenda, which is a MMO btw.
If you haven't then take a look. Depending on how the final development cycles go it could be a really good game.

Ohh and speculation on the Star Wars MMO is middle of 2010.
