Okay, to some extent the title is misleading and a lie. Actually, your review can matter, but for the most part, the majority of people who sit down and write these reviews are biased in one form or another.
'Oh no, D!' you say to me. 'I'm very open minded about my games!'
Yes, well Confucious said that 'If a mind is too open, everything falls out.' This is exactly the problem we're facing in gaming nowadays. People are open minded, liberal and will take ANYTHING the industry gives them.
I digress. Back to the original topic...
The problem with amateur reviews (Besides the obvious lack of grammar, vocabulary and spelling corrections.) is that people are much too open minded. They're not critical enough. You're out there on your review site giving a 10 out of 10 to games like Resident Evil 5 and Fallout 3, games which are nowhere NEAR perfectly entertaining.
Now don't get me wrong. I understand that one man's trash is another man's treasure and I'm not saying the above examples aren't good games. Not at all. I'm simply saying that people are drooling over these run of the mill games that don't deserve to be on the pedestal that they have been placed on. Sure, they're enjoyable little adventures, but think more critically. Pick the game apart.
Simply playing a game and saying 'Oh I liked this.' doesn't make you a qualified reviewer. Oh it gives you an opinion about the game and everyone's entitled to an opinion, but for the most part people aren't going to give a damn if you enjoyed giving your pet a bath every day in Harvest Moon 6bajillionand12. People don't get a clear picture of a game unless you weigh the pros and the cons, and when a game has cons it's not perfect.
In all honesty this is a plea to everyone out there thinking about reviewing a game. Meditate on your gameplay experience. What made it bad? What made it good? Does it REALLY deserve that high rating or are you just coming down off the adreniline of a zombie killer spree and deciding to give someone false hope with ZOMG LOTS OF ZOMBIES KILLED SOOO MUCH FUN!?!?!
How was the music? Was the voice acting well done and timed? Are those graphics something you expected to see 5 years ago? What about the art direction?
Be more critcal. Stop gorging yourselves with sub-par games from the corporation and weed out the bad ones so that you can truly enjoy the good ones. The ones that deserve to be called classics.
